Mounting goals with the surface unit are:

1. Insulation between the Subsonus unit and the pole is required to avoid ground loops.

2. The Subsonus unit should be mounted with the hydrophone array and cage pointing directly down into the water.

3. The connector blanking bolt on the side of Subsonus must be aligned so that it is pointing in the backwards direction of the vessel, opposite to the direction of travel. There is an arrow on the underside of the unit - this arrow must point toward the front of the vessel when the Subsonus is mounted.

4. The Subsonus unit should be mounted at least 1 metre under the surface of the water, and at least 0.5 m below the vessel keel. The surface unit should be deep enough that it never comes out of the water.

5. The Subsonus unit should be mounted at least 1 metre away from the boat hull or jetty.

6. The Subsonus unit should be mounted away from propellers and thrusters. It should be mounted in a position where it will have minimal air bubbles passing over or below the hydrophones.

The surface Subsonus unit can also be mounted to fixed structures such as jetties or buoys, where the same mounting goals apply except that in this scenario the connector alignment does not matter.
